James Collins (b. March 24, 1976) was the first Vice President of the United Republic of Ireland, having taken office on the 29th August 2011.

Before becoming Vice-President, Collins was a Teachtai Dala for the Donegal constituency for 10 years. He holds the record as the youngest TD anywhere in Ireland after becoming a member of the House of Comhdhail at the age of just 25. During his time as a TD, he introduced a law giving pensioners a 2% rise in their daily income in 2010.

James Collins was assassinated on the 31st December 2011 in Donegal after being shot while trying to escape a New Ulster Army ambush during the Irish Civil War.

Early life[]

Collins was born in a small town on the outskirts of Letterkenny in 1976. His family owned a bar and Collins often worked there when he was younger. He attended Christian Brothers Primary school and later went on the graduate at Donegal County College with a degree in Politics and Law.

Political career[]

Collins began his political career at the age of 21 and stormed through the hierarchy of the Donegal County Council and became the chairman of the County council at the age of just 23 after the 1999 General Election. Collins dedicated his political career to improving the rights of Pensioners throughout Ireland. He introduced the Pensioner Income act which increased the Daily income of Pensioners by 2% and he also introduced the Pensioner Retirement home act which built over 15 retirement homes in Ireland within the space of two years. These two acts gained him a lot of Popularity and he got a seat in the House of Comhdháil in the 2001 General election. He was voted the most popular politician in a tabloid survey in 2005. Collins continued his work to improve the rights of pensioners which eventually granted him a senior position in the government.

Personal life[]

Collins lived in Dublin although he often stayed with his family in their family home in Donegal. He was married to Anne Collins with whom he hadsa daughter, Maria Collins. Collins enjoyed hunting and owned a variety of weapons.
