History[]
Switzerland was a league of cantons formed from the forest districts of Schwyz, Uri, and Unterwalden under the Holy Roman Empire in 1291. More cantons were eventually added. The Treaty of Westphalia gave Switzerland its independence in 1648. Switzerland was occupied by the French in 1798 and renamed the Helvetic Republic until its government was restored in 1803. French- and Italian-speaking gained political equality in 1815. The independence and neutrality of Switzerland was recognized in 1815.
Switzerland became a part of the Duchy in 2009.
