History[]

Ukraine was known as Kievan Rus until the 16th century. Kiev was a major political and cultural center of Eastern Europe. Kievan Rus’ power peaked in the 10th century and Byzantine Christianity was adopted. Kievan power ceased with the Mongol conquest of 1240. Kiev was under Polish and western European influence from the 13th century to the 16th century. Ukrainians were divided into Orthodox and Ukrainian Catholics with the Union of Brest-Litovsk in 1596. The czar of Moscovy was enlisted for help against Poland in 1654. The Treaty of Pereyasav unintentionally left the door open for Russian conquest and the Ukrainian state became part of the Russian Empire. Ukraine declared its independence in 1918 after the Russian Revolution. This sparked conflict and the Red Army eventually overthrew Kiev and made Ukraine part of the USSR in 1920 and a founder of the USSR in 1922. World War II devastated Ukraine. Ukraine declared independence in August 1991.

Ukraine became a part of the Duchy in 2010.
