The Province of Belarus (German: Provinz von Belarus) is a province of the Duchy of Brunswick. The province is made up of the former Republic of Belarus. It is bordered by the provinces of Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lituania, and Latvia. Its capital is Minsk.

History[]

Belarus was colonized in the 5th century by Slavic tribes and dominated by Kiev from the 9th century until the 12th century. Mongols leveled Kiev in the 13th century which allowed the Lithuanians to conquer the region. It remained part of Lithuania until Lithuania merged with Poland in 1569. Belarus was given to the Russian Empire as part of the partitions of Poland. Belarus became a republic after World War I but was occupied by the Russians soon after the declaration. Belarus was split up into West Belarus and Belorussian SSR in the Polish-Soviet War. The Belorussian SSR became part of the USSR in 1922 and West Belarus was taken back in 1939. Belarus declared its sovereignty in 1990 but didn’t become independent until 1991.

Belarus became a province of the Duchy in 2009.
